Joanna Parkin
Joanna Parkin is a textile designer specialising in luxury, yet affordable handmade accessories. Here she talks to stylechapel about the inspiration behind her work.
What made you become a designer in the first place?
I did a textiles degree and have always loved making gifts for people. I worked in a high-end silk shop for just over 3 years and would always get inspired chatting to costume designers. My passion lies in creating high quality, gorgeous products.
What/who has been the biggest inspiration in your career so far and why?
My Mum. She has always encouraged me to go for it, still helps me out when I need her and is generally very supportive.
How do you source the raw materials?
Having worked in a silk shop I’m used to handling fabulous fabrics, so I know what to look for.
What is your design philosophy?
To hand make every item, using the finest fabrics and the best leathers to create affordable, beautiful products.
What is your ambition?
My ambition is to run a successful business. I would like to expand my range and become a household name. Ideally I would like a signature item.
LET'S GET PERSONAL ...
Worst fashion disaster?
Well I am a red head and my fashion disaster was a fuchsia pink velvet dress that I wore to my school prom… really bad.
Unforgettable place?
Tanzania. I went on a safari with my family and it was hands down the most amazing place I have seen.
Books on your bedside table?
I’m currently reading The Help by Kathryn Stockett
An indulgence you couldn’t live without?
Red wine… I just love it.
Your favourite style icon?
Kate Moss
The sort of place or situation where you find inspiration?
It literally could be anywhere depending on how I’m feeling. I love cool quirky bars and restaurants with interesting art pieces on the walls.
